Waste Education

The City of Marion recognises the importance of working in partnerships to improve how waste is best managed and avoided.

As such, the City of Marion's Waste Education Officer is available to provide education and work with residents, community groups and schools. These sessions are designed to engage and motivate across a wide range of audiences.

A wide variety of presentations and workshops are available to promote recycling and ethical waste management practices.

Waste education

The City of Marion is committed to actively encouraging, promoting and supporting best practice waste management.

The Waste Education Officer offers a wide variety of presentations, workshops and information sessions to promote recycling and ethical waste management practices for residents, community groups and schools.

Types of presentations for schools and community groups

Waste education presentations and workshops include the following topics:

  • Tricky waste and what to do with it.
  • Three Bin Kerbside System.
  • Recycling - the importance of recycling right.
  • What happens to waste once it leaves the kerb.
  • Waste minimisation and avoidance.
  • Food waste and what to do with it (e.g. Home composting, worm farming and the organics bin).

Sessions are interactive, fun and flexible, and can be tailored to suit the needs of your group, combine any one of the above topics or surround your specific questions about waste. School presentations range from individual classes to whole school and curriculum support.

Sessions are normally 40-50 minutes but can be as short as 20-30 minute talk to a longer two hour workshop, depending on your needs.

Student activities

What am I recycled into?
This activity gives students the ability to consolidate the knowledge gained at a 4Rs session about different items in the yellow lidded recycling bin and what they can be recycled into.

In this game the matching cards are placed next to one another in the template; however, the card game can be adapted to include other correct answers such as paper can be recycled into paper and newspaper into more newspaper, by duplicating copies of appropriate cards.

Three bin sorting activity

Students use information from either the Waste and Recycling Services brochure, the fact sheets, or a Three Bin Waste Education Session to determine which bin different items should go into. An answer sheet for teachers is also provided.

  • This download is currently being updated and will be available soon!

Waste Less Lunches or Nude Food

Using the Nude Food worksheets, students consider the waste that comes from their lunches to help Sally and Mr Brice to improve their lunches to reduce their waste.
