Business Excellence
The City of Marion adopted a Business Excellence Framework in 2004, and uses it to assess different aspects of the organisation to ensure we are on the right path.
In recognition of the City of Marion's achievements in business excellence, SAI Global awarded Council with a gold trophy in the 2010 Australian Business Excellence Awards.
The sought-after award recognises Marion's commitment to best practice, and places Council among the most outstanding national and international organisations. Previous winners include BHP, Toyota, Ford, ING Funds Management and Ericsson Australia.
A real benefit of the win is what can be learnt from having judges examine the City of Marion's business to identify areas for improvement, where feedback is being used to focus on goals for future success.
What is the Business Excellence Framework?
The Business Excellence Framework is a leadership and management system that describes key areas which help organisations to perform at their best.
It can be used to assess and improve any aspect of an organisation, including leadership, strategy and planning, people, information and knowledge, safety, service delivery, product quality and bottom-line results.
For more information on the Business Excellence Framework, visit the SAI Global Website.
National Local Government Business Excellence Network
The City of Marion has had active involvement in the National Local Government Business Excellence Network and is the current chairing council.
The network was formed in 2003 by a group of Victorian Councils undertaking Business Excellence improvements. The network has since expanded to include Councils from New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.
Its aim is to learn from each other and others outside the network about implementing excellence in Local Government. It is a great way to share the best ways of delivering services, and generally improving the way Local Government does business across Australia. Visit the Local Government Business Excellence Network website for more information.
What does business excellence mean for customers and community?
Studies have shown that organisations that have used the Business Excellence Framework have significantly outperformed those who have not used an excellence framework.
In terms of benefits to City of Marion's customers and community, the following are just some of the outcomes we have achieved:
- Improved quality and consistency,
- Higher customer satisfaction and fewer complaints,
- Reduced cost due to inefficiency or rework,
- Productivity gains through people and process,
- Increased financial sustainability,
- Engaged and empowered staff,
- Better risk management,
- Systems that support our current and future goals, and
- Lasting improvements and sustainable performance.
