Mayor's Message

Welcome to the Mayor's Message column, which aims to keep you up-to-date with what is happening in the City of Marion.

The Mayor, Kris Hanna, is busy visiting the many community groups in our area, and meeting the people who make our city such a wonderful place in which to live.

This column allows Mayor Hanna to share these experiences and provide you with important information on a regular basis.

Mayor’s Message – November 2017

Thank you to the 300 or so people who told us how our area should be built up - or not. It was the biggest community consultation on planning regulations in the history of Marion.

Council carefully considered your views on the draft Housing Diversity Plan Amendment (DPA) and made significant changes. There has been some marathon Council meetings along the way, but we were working to the deadline given to us by the State Government.

In a sense the whole draft DPA was a compromise from the beginning. Many residents wanted less excessive subdivision and less congested streets. We were told by our staff and the Department of Planning we would never be allowed to reduce subdivisions unless greater density is imposed in some other areas.

The draft DPA will now be submitted to the Minister’s Office. The Minister can do anything with the DPA: accept it, reject it or impose something unexpected. Frankly I don't expect to hear back before the election in March.

If the Minister does accept our DPA, we won't necessarily improve overcrowding in our suburbs .. but we can stop it getting worse!
