Marino Community Garden

The first community garden in Marino will begin construction in April 2016 to give residents the opportunity to grow their own food, meet likeminded people and learn new skills.

The decision follows Marino Community Garden Inc submitting an application in 2015 and a public consultation in early 2016 which found 75% of respondents were in favour of the garden.

People supported the garden because it will strengthen and connect the community, improve the local amenity of the area, support the development of local skills, and be inclusive and culturally sustainable.

What to expect at the garden

Initially the garden will include raised garden beds for individual, family and community plots, fruit trees in raised beds, and a garden shed.

The garden plan is based on a wheel design, consisting of eight wedges to be separated by gravel paths. Each wedge will contain a number of raised garden beds.

Marino Community Garden site plan

The design was developed by group members using permaculture principles and to complement the existing environment. The group has adapted the design (from its original plan) to move the shed closer to the fence line, in response to resident’s suggestions raised during the consultation.

The group plans to stage the construction of the garden wedges as membership grows. Construction will begin with the northern half of the design.

Marino Community Garden will be developed progressively to include shade trees, wind shelter belts, demonstration and educational activities, seating, shade, sheds, bike rack, water tank and a potential children’s garden depending on demand.
