The main aim of the Community Care service is to promote, provide and support independence, enabling people to live at home while maintaining their wellbeing and social connections.

Domestic assistance

Various levels of domestic assistance are available to meet identified goals which will assist clients to remain living independently in their home. These include:

  • Short term: Reablement focus.
  • Medium term: While transitioning to another service/s.
  • Long term: Promoting independence while working with the client to achieve their goal. Focusing on strengths and embedding wellness in all aspects of their life.
  • Spring clean: Eligible clients can receive a service per financial year.

Clients are expected to provide cleaning equipment and cleaning materials. There are annual limits for each of these services.

Home maintenance, gutter cleaning and gardening

Basic maintenance work to ensure clients safety by:

  • Changing tap washers and minor plumbing
  • Replacing light globes and minor electrical
  • Gardening (annual limit applies)
  • Gutter cleaning (annual limit applies)

Home safety and security
  • Repairing/replacing fly wire
  • Installing smoke detectors and batteries
  • Installing a key safe
  • Performing safety audits
  • Fitting security locks and devices

Home modifications

Promoting independence and mobility by:

  • Installing grab and hand rails
  • Changing to handheld showers
  • Mounting magnetic catches
  • Door reversal
  • Installing small ramps

Home modification requires occupational therapy assessment.

Social support

Individually tailored service to promote clients’ physical and emotional wellbeing by socialising, connecting and participating in the community. An opportunity for people who are socially isolated to build friendships, confident and learn new skills.

Services include:

  • Volunteer assisted shopping.
  • Friendly visiting – coffee and a chat.
  • Assisting with non-legal forms.
  • Supporting clients first visit to a community centre.
  • Visiting a relative in hospital.
  • Supporting clients to medical and allied health appointments.
  • Building confidence to reconnect to the community.

Social support is subject to individual assessment, availability of a volunteer and will be reviewed regularly. Services will be provided within Council boundaries or close surrounds.

Marion Wave Makers

Marion Wave Makers program is an activity with physical and mental health benefits, and can be continued for a lifetime.

It is also an inclusive activity and a great way of making new friends. An exercise physiologist who tailors movements and water activities for your specific needs oversees these weekly sessions.

Trade register

The City of Marion maintains a list of private businesses including gardeners, painters, cleaners, electricians and plumbers which operate in the Marion area. 

  • Council does not recommend these businesses, but does check that they have current public liability insurance, police clearance and contacts their referees as well as seeks feedback from anyone using their services.
  • The businesses listed are not subsidised by Council.
  • Clients are encouraged to seek comparison quotes.
